"Most interesting is the primary and secondary coils
are
made of
TWO solid strands of #20 (each strand) twisted communication wire. The
primary is 55 turns and the secondary 53. The coils are 4 inches
in diameter and are air wound and tied off. The Bondini was used
sparingly
to glue the coils to the pvc standoffs. The coupling of all coils can
be
infinately varied.
The trap is 51 turns of #22 magnet wire solendoid
wound on
a 3 inch
form. I used a Bogen transformer and USI sound powered phones.
I used a schotty diode connected at the transformer
and
wired directly
to the "hot end" of the detector coil. The three caps on the left were
used in series (in actual operation I normally shorted the 2 bottom
caps)
to tune the antenna and the remaining cap was wired across the
secondary.
I was greatly suprised by the performance and logged aproximately 60
stations.
The prize was a low wattage station from Arizona, this happened just
after
local sunset. This is a distance of 2895 kilometers. I got plenty
advice
and guidance from this site, Steve Bringhurst and other members of the
xtal set society. Thanks to all! Lou Dayich"

"This is my all-time favorite that snagged 59 stations in
seven
states,
two canadian provinces and Mexico.
I call it the "Litz Blitz". It is to be featured in an
upcoming
Xtal Set Society Newsletter."

"On the left is my #41 single coil set that is in
the
hobby class.
On the right is my #35 set using a Tuggle style front end and Hobbydyne
back end. The sections are on separate breadboards so that coil spacing
(about 15 inches) can be achieved. Both sets use 660/46 litz. The
headphones
are sound powered US Instrument Corp. types cobbled from a
handset.
Both sets were built especially for the contests and
my
listening
pleasure."

"Here's a photo of my current dxing mess. Yes,
it
takes five
coils and one toroid trap to run it. The three caps set in
plexiglass
are 2 single caps which replaced a dual varicap in a modification of
the
traditional Tuggle front-end, and the third cap controls the detector
tank;
the three five gang caps control the inductive traps and the stand
alone
trw cap controls the in line toroid trap. Best overall coupling
distance
of antenna coil to detector coil is 8-9" separation which amazes me
after
using solid wire." |
